24,000 Nautical Miles…Photos From a Circumnavigation

The exhibition 24,000 Nautical Miles…Photos From a Circumnavigation is a solo show that Monica exhibited in and curated. In the spring of 2014 Monica and her family circumnavigated the world on the 50th anniversary voyage of the University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea program. The journey lasted 112 days with 554 students visiting 16 ports. Monica’s exhibition featured photographs from her travels to 12 countries, including Myanmar, Ghana, South Africa, Japan, China, India and Vietnam. It took place between September 9-17, 2014 at the James Palmer Gallery located in the College Center of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Sirens

Serving as artist and curator, Monica’s solo exhibition, Sirens, featured a series of her prints titled Circles of Desire in which she extracted circular worlds from found mid-twentieth-century Kodachrome color transparencies. This work reexamines issues of beauty, desire and domesticity. It took place in August of 2004 at LoRiver Arts Gallery in Beacon, NY.

From the Streets of Hanoi

In the summer of 1992 Monica was living in Hanoi, Vietnam on a research visa. There she made a body of work titled From the Streets of Hanoi, in which she used found papers to document her time there. These assemblages are made using all kinds of clippings from receipts and toilet paper to plastic bags and lottery tickets. This began her practice of making collage based on materials found in situ while traveling.
