Letters From Jules

Issue No. 3 of The Extra Mule, a magazine edited by Sophia Healy, features a selection of letters between Sophia and Jules Olitski and his wife Kristina. Healy met Olitski in 1965 when they were both teaching in the art department at Bennington College. The letters and poems are published as they were written and one can imagine opening each one after it’s arrival in the day’s mail. The handwritten words and typed lines share an intimate and caring relationship between the two artists. Along with Dr. Alba De Leon and Andrea Woodner, I worked with Sophia to select from over 70 letters covering over a decade to be published in The Extra Mule, No. 3 - Letters from Jules. During the time we spent together, I was able to photograph Sophia re-reading the letters and finding Jules 1985 self-portrait that don’s the cover and three of these images are included.
